Steel Magnolias

So what's going on with Steel Dynamics? Basically, it's exactly what I warned you about last month, after reviewing the disturbing news of weak demand for steel in China, revealed by Schnitzer Steel (NASDAQ: SCHN ) in its earnings report. Steel Dynamics is hitting headwinds all around the globe: In China: "slower anticipated economic growth" In Europe: "suppressed economic growth" And here at home: "persistent uncertainty in the domestic economic environment," leading to "low inventory levels" among customers, and a general condition of "domestic oversupply" -- exacerbated by "increased quarter-over-quarter steel imports" Seeing a steel lining 'round looming clouds Granted, the news isn't all bad at Steel Dynamics. Management does say that it's seen "meaningful volume improvements for rail, engineered special bar quality products, andgalvanized sheet steel," plus "modest growth in the overall construction market."Automotive demand is also said to be "strong", and manufactured goods, "strengthening". Yet analysts on average project that, even if business improves, the company can only expect to grow its earnings at 12% per year over the next five years, at best -- and that's off of today's low base.

India has certainly lost sheen, said Prasad Baji, an analyst at Edelweiss Financial Services in Mumbai. I dont see the investment cycle returning in the near future. Tata Steel, Indias biggest producer of the alloy, fell as much as 1.6 percent to 237.10 rupees in Mumbai trading, extending its drop this year to 44 percent. Steel Authority of India Ltd. , the second-biggest, gained as much as 1.9 percent to 45.80 rupees, pairing this years decline to 50 percent. Smaller rival JSW Steel Ltd.

But that's just what Henry Lennix, who played General Swanwick in this summer's Man of Steel blockbuster, did at the San Diego Convention Center's Hall H on Saturday afternoon. When he joined the film's star Henry Cavill on stage at the end of the Man of Steel panel, director Zack Snyder asked him to read something. Snyder told the audience, "We're not adapting this thing, but it will help us tell you something." Related stories: Fashion tugs on Superman's cape at Comic-Con "I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat," Lennix read from Frank Miller's seminal "The Dark Knight Returns," which culminates in an older Batman going toe-to-toe with a Superman who has become a lackey of the U.S. government. "I want you to remember the one man who beat you," Lennix read from the book, published in 1986. A combined Superman-Batman logo appeared on the auditorium's screen, and then the lights came up.

This doesn't feel like a weak cash-in attempt to re-tell the story. It's a thoughtful take on the story. These are good reason to applaud the cast, the production team, and all involved for creating something special and with worth to fans. You become enthralled by their efforts: Condola Rashad and Queen Latifah are especially well matched for the mother-daughter dynamic and bring some genuine emotion to these roles, with carefully nuanced performances that are emotionally stirring and memorable. Alffre Woodard is also notable for her charming and charismatic performance as Louisa; the offbeat and unique performance earned her a nomination for the 2013 Emmy Awards. Many of the audiences seeing this version of Steel Magnolias will find it to me more faithful to the original source material of the play than the previous film production. While both versions add in elements which weren't present initially (the play takes besi beton online place inside of the beauty shop and doesn't introduce the male characters or the side-plots that are explored in both films the same way) this version spends a great deal of time inside of the beauty shop and less time in exploring the other areas of the adaptation grounds.
